Crafting Coziness: Knitting a Cup Cozy with a 22-Pin Machine

Hey there, fellow crafting enthusiasts! Today, I’m diving into the wonderful world of circular knitting machines to show you how to create a cozy cup accessory that’s perfect for sipping your favorite beverages in style. Grab your 22-pin knitting machine, some yarn, and let’s get started on this fun project!

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. A 22-pin circular knitting machine. I recommend the Addi Express 22 Pin.
  2. Worsted weight yarn in your favorite color. I’m using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in a variegated color.
  3. Scissors.
  4. A tapestry needle. I really like these bent tip metal darning needles.
  5. Buttons or embellishments for added flair (optional). These faux leather handmade tags make a great impression.
  6. Crochet Hook (5-5.5mm). I’m using the Prym 5mm hook.

Step 1: Setting Up Your Machine

Begin by setting up your 22-pin knitting machine on a stable surface. Make sure it’s clean and in good working condition.

Step 2: Cast On

Using your machine, cast on with scrap yarn. Crank out about 5-10 rows of waste or scrap yarn. Once you get to the first pin, take out of the yarn feeder and place the excess yarn in the middle.

Step 3: Crank Away!

Now, it’s time to let your machine work its magic. Add your main color ensuring the first pin catches the yarn. Turn the crank slowly and watch as your cup cozy starts to take shape. Remember to maintain a consistent pace to ensure even stitches. Crank out 45 rows.

Step 4: Waste Yarn & Cast Off

Once you’ve gotten to 45 rows, it’s time to cut your yarn ensuring the last pin catches the main color. Place remainder in the middle and add your scrap yarn to the yarn feeder, ensuring the first pin catches the scrap or waste yarn. Crank out 5-10 rows. Place remainder yarn in the middle. Crank around 2 more times to remover your project from the machine.

Step 5: Close Tubes

Close both sides of the tube by using your crochet hook and seaming each end. Find where you cast on initially. Count over 11 stitches so you’re halfway around the tube. Insert the crochet hook from the outside into the stitch. Grab the loop to the right, and pull thru the loop into a slip stitch. Grab the loop on the bottom and pull thru the loop. Continue alternating grabbing loops and pulling thru the crochet hook. When you get to the end grab the tail end and pull through to fasten off.

Step 6: Create Handles

Grab your crochet hook. Make a slipknot, insert hook into slip knot and then into one end of the tube you closed. Chain 20. Connect the chain to the other end of the tube. Do this for the other side of the tube. Fasten off. Using your tapestry needle, weave in any loose ends and secure them. If you’d like, add buttons or other embellishments to give your cup cozy a personal touch.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Handcrafted Cup Cozy

Voila! You’ve just created a cozy cup accessory with your 22-pin knitting machine. Slip it onto your cup, and you’re ready to enjoy your favorite beverage in style.

In conclusion, circular knitting machines make it a breeze to craft practical and delightful accessories like cup cozies. With a little practice, you’ll be whipping up these cozy companions in no time. Happy crafting!
